Campaign Story

About the project

The project works in Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. It has been observed that though the Anganwadi teachers are providing Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), currently, it can be better. The preschool readiness program is not being implemented due to lack of skills in Anganwadi workers, which needs to be addressed. Also, children are dropping out of school and moving towards child labor.

Making a difference

CRY America’s Project Pragathi is working to ensure quality education for children in the intervention area, reduction of child labor, formation of children collectives and developing life skills. The activities taken under the project are, ensuring admission of children above 3 years into the preschool program of Anganwadi, sensitizing parents of dropout children on the importance of education and encouraging teachers to visit families with child laborers, thus urging parents to send them back to school.

Fight Against Violation Of Child Rights

CRY America project Pragathi has been working with the Yanadi tribe since its inception. The team has observed increased child labor and dropouts since 2020 due to COVID. The project also observed that long-term child laborers have fewer chances of re-enrollment in schools and may continue in the vicious circle.

In 2022, the project also identified 82 cases of child marriage. When it came to girl child labor, the implications were more severe. Parents who sent their children to work often depended on their earnings, creating an extra burden on the children, and they could not cope with these responsibilities at a young age. Children lost their learning capacity, leisure for play, and recreation.

After noticing the problems, the team worked innovatively to resolve the issue. Awareness sessions and home visits were conducted towards a government scheme which provides financial assistance to families to educate their children. The team also collaborated with various stakeholders to re-enrol child laborers back in school.

In the past year, the project has successfully mainstreamed 116 dropouts, removed 28 children from labor and averted 64 child marriages.
